Euro Cylinder

Cylinder locks are commonly used on uPVC doors, but can also be found on other types of doors. They work by using a key that unlock a cylinder that then reveals pins which can be aligned to those inside the lock body, allow them to rotate an revolving cam, opening the door. Euro cylinders can be equipped with up to six pins, with external and internal doors typically needing different levels of security.

The choice of cylinder is crucial. It's dependent on the use that your doors and handles receive. Doors that are external, for instance are required to be fitted with higher security cylinders, whereas doors inside can be secured using the standard cylinder. Additionally, certain cylinders have extra features which can enhance security further, such as anti-drill or anti-bump properties.

A euro cylinder must be measured accurately to ensure it is the right size for your door. The cylinder should be measured from the central fixing screw hole to the end of the cylinder, including the thumb turn if you have one. If you cannot measure using the lock in a fixed position, you can remove it. A cylinder that protrudes beyond the handle and escutcheon may be vulnerable to attacks, such as snapping locks, therefore it is crucial that it is not too long.

The design of the latest cylinders includes anti-drilling and bump resistance features. They are designed to decrease the risk of attack by causing the cylinder to rotate in an opposite direction. This will help deflect the attack, and ensure your door is secure.

Certain cylinders are constructed to withstand snapping. This is a common attack on cylinders. A special tool is used to break the break line of the lock, and then the front of the cylinder is snapped off. This is much quicker and easier to achieve than gaining access through multipoint locks.
